GABA-receptor

GABA-receptors located in synapses are membrane proteins that bind to the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and help regulate neuronal activity by inhibiting the firing of action potentials, maintaining a balance between excitation and inhibition in the brain.

These receptors are ligand-gated ion channel that can modulate the flow of Cl– ions across the membrane. This figure was created for researchers at the Reddy lab at TAMU, TX and depicts synaptic and extrasynaptic GABA-receptors which can be modulated by the binding of neurosteroids.
